Participants need to bring:

  • Sewing machine โ€“ not a small travel machine unless the height of the presser foot can be raised to accommodate 7/32 fabric wrapped clothesline
  • Walking foot and open-toe foot if you have them
  • Table extension for sewing machine
  • Fabric โ€“ You will be using a 4 ยฝ inch circle on the bottom of the bowl. In addition, you will be wrapping the rope with ยพ in fabric strips cut selvage to selvage.
(not bias cut) The fabric you choose should coordinate with the fabric circle, and it will take about 10 strips or so.
  • Thread that matches fabric (I use serger thread to cut expenses)
  • Enough medium weight fusible interfacing to cut a 4 ยฝ inch circle
  • Cutting mat, rotary cutter, and template that can be used to cut fabric strips. If 3 or 4 people bring those, we can share
  • We will need a couple of circle templates for a 4 ยฝ in circle
  • Iron an
  • Scissors
  • HD jeans machine needle โ€“ 90/14 or 100/16
  • Pins โ€“ youโ€™ll need about half a dozen
  • Hand sewing needle about 2โ€ long
  • Seam Ripper (Just in case)

Tips

The rope MUST feed on the right side!!!!
Check your tension as soon as possible after you start making the bottom spiral and occasionally as you continue sewing.
Wood beads โ€“ Round are from Amazon. PH Pandahall 120 piece package. 20 mm with 9 mm hole. $11.49. Oval are from American Woodcrafters Supply; 1 ยผ inch; package of 500 was $99.95; Item #BD-730; the hole looks like 3/8 inch. These sizes will accommodate 2 rounds of unwrapped rope.
There are a lot of FB groups, Pinterest posts, and You Tube videos that provide instruction as well as inspiration.
If your fabric circle bottom is directional, you will need to carefully plan where to start wrapping so that you end appropriately.
Guide the rope, but donโ€™t pull it as it feeds into the machine.
The rope is typically oval, not round, so be aware of that as you guide it. Donโ€™t let the rope twist.
Both the rope and the beads are likely to have flaws. Check both before you sew. Rope may have substantial differences between packages even though itโ€™s the same brand.

20 Feet of Rope
Crayola Washable Glue Sticks
Markers
Beads if you want to use them
